Volunteers
are valued an integral part of EDVP. You will receive
the necessary initial training supplemented by in-service
trainings and will be supervised by the Volunteer Coordinator
and other staff persons. A staff member will be accessible
to each volunteer for support and advising. Volunteers
may request recommendations or a record of the number
of service hours donated. Also upon request, they may
be reimbursed for expenses and mileage. Volunteers will
become familiar with community resources and develop
many valuable transferable skills. Finally, EDVP volunteers
feel that they are contributing to the mission to end
domestic violence and making a proactive difference
in a critical problem facing our society.
What
Kind of Training Does EDVP Provide?
Depending
on the volunteer position (see the next
page for details) we either provide a 3 hour Orientation
Training or an 50-hour in-depth training program. The
50 hour training includes an orientation to the agency,
an overview of the cycles and continuums involved in
domestic violence, information and practicum on advocacy-based
counseling, active listening and communications skills,
crisis intervention, legal issues, children's issues,
community resources, anti-oppression training and the
role of the advocate. Here is a typical Training
Program Curriculum.
In
addition to the initial training, EDVP provides in-service
trainings for all volunteers and disseminates information
about related trainings offered by other groups or agencies.
