IntroductionWho are the Abusers?

There is no one type of person who is a victim of domestic violence. A victim of domestic violence does not

cause the violence to happen. The violence is a result of the abuser’s behavior, not the victim’s.

Domestic Violence happens to people from all different backgrounds. It happens to people of all ages, races, cultures, sexual orientations, religions, economic levels, and educational levels.

Anyone can be a victim of domestic violence. However, 90-95% of domestic violence victims are women. Men can also be victims.[1]

Children are impacted by domestic violence, either by witnessing the abuse or by being abused themselves. For more information about the impact of domestic violence on children, see our Domestic Violence and Children page.
